Malaysia’s Digital Roadmap Gains Momentum — OPERION Ready to Support Businesses in the Transformation Journey

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia is rapidly advancing towards its goal of becoming a regional hub for high-tech, eco-friendly data centres, with the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) driving significant progress in the nation’s digitalisation efforts, said Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo.

Gobind described the 13MP as “timely and critical” in cementing Malaysia’s role in the regional digital economy. The plan focuses on attracting large-scale investments, building robust digital infrastructure, and cultivating skilled talent to support the country’s transformation.

Speaking at the CloudTech & DataCentre Conference 2.0, he emphasised that advanced cloud infrastructure is key to maximising the potential of Malaysia’s 5G network. These data centres, he said, will power innovations such as smart cities, precision healthcare, and autonomous mobility.

“To fully unlock the benefits of 5G, we require ultra-low latency, secure, and scalable data centres. We are building these capabilities now, not later,” Gobind stated.

Between 2021 and 2023, Malaysia approved RM114.7 billion in data centre and cloud service investments, creating more than 2,300 high-value jobs. The government aims to achieve RM3.6 billion in data centre industry revenue by 2025.

Acknowledging environmental concerns, Gobind assured that sustainability will be prioritised by incorporating energy-efficient systems, renewable energy sources, and advanced cooling technologies. He identified three key pillars for a future-ready digital ecosystem: infrastructure, security and trust, and talent—emphasising the importance of upskilling, reskilling, and digital awareness, particularly in roles affected by artificial intelligence (AI).
